HSBC sags on $30 billion capital raising worry

LONDON (Reuters) - HSBC Holdings is likely to halve its dividend and may need to raise up to $30 billion in a rights issue, according to leading analysts, sending shares in Europe's biggest bank to a seven-year low. Morgan Stanley slashed its earnings forecasts for HSBC for this year and next, and said its relative capital position is not as strong as in the past. "Our detailed study of HSBC's capital and asset quality position reinforces our belief that it will have to halve the dividend and raise major capital in 2009," Morgan Stanley analysts Anil Agarwal and Michael Helsby said in a note. By 5:35 a.m. EST HSBC's London-listed shares were down 8.4 percent at 586 pence, after hitting 581.5p, their lowest level since September 2001. Its Hong Kong shares closed down 4.1 percent at HK$70. The DJ Stoxx Europe bank sector was down 5 percent as the capital worries, a profit warning from Deutsche Bank and big job cuts highlighted the problems facing the industry. HSBC has easily outperformed rivals in the past year as unlike most big banks it has not had to raise capital, due to its historically strong capital and liquidity. But it is facing increasing scrutiny over any potential need to raise funds as the economy worsens. "Historically, HSBC has carried about 120 basis points of surplus capital at the group level - this has now all but gone at a time when we think it better for the buffer to have increased," Agarwal said in the note. "We believe HSBC is highly likely to cut the dividend in 2009, and in our bear case we now pencil in a 20 billion pounds ($29.2 billion) rights issue." HSBC paid out about $10.1 billion in dividends in 2007. HSBC's tier 1 capital was 8.9 percent at the end of September, above the European average. Its core tier 1 ratio stood at 7.5 percent at the end of June. HSBC declined to comment on the research note, but in the past it has said it is comfortable with its capital position and its high cash generation, strong liquidity and funding keeps its capital well topped up. Some analysts expect it to only raise capital if it takes advantage of problems elsewhere and makes an acquisition. EARNINGS PRESSURE Morgan Stanley estimated HSBC had injected about $11 billion of equity into its subsidiaries last year, and said its core capital ratio included about $15 billion of available-for-sale reserve, which most European and Asian banks are not allowed. Others analysts have also said HSBC needs to raise capital to restore its advantage over rivals. Citigroup, Santander, Royal Bank of Scotland, Barclays and many others have taken state rescue funds or raised cash privately to rebuild balance sheets. Agarwal cut his HSBC 2009 earnings per share forecast by 39 percent to 55 cents, down from an estimated 90 cents for 2008, and cut its 2010 forecast by a third to 50 cents. HSBC faces structural and cyclical headwinds from lower interest rates, higher bad debts and unfavorable foreign exchange moves, he said, predicting weaker revenue in the United States, Britain and Asia as a global recession takes hold. "If HSBC cut its dividend by half its dividend yield will fall to 5 percent from 10 percent and given the bank's huge exposure to the UK and U.S. market, 5 percent yield is not attractive anymore," said Steven Leung, director with UOB Kay Hian in Hong Kong. HSBC's earnings are not expected to recover until 2011 at the earliest, Morgan Stanley said. RBS cuts Barclays, HSBC Holdings to sell

It's funny!
Jan 16 (Reuters) - RBS Research downgraded Barclays Plc (BARC.L: Quote, Profile, Research), HSBC Holdings Plc (HSBA.L: Quote, Profile, Research) and Standard Chartered (STAN.L: Quote, Profile, Research) to "sell" from "hold," and said the market value of UK banks' assets is less than their outstanding liabilities, and it expects losses for them through to 2011.
"This will drive persistent fears of further equity issuance unless governments or regulators offer equity-friendly bailouts," RBS said in a note to clients.
The brokerage said its outlook for U.K. bank equity investors remains bleak and reiterated its "underweight" rating on the sector.
RBS said the current capital position of Barclays looks increasingly stretched due to a deteriorating macro outlook and sharp declines in the market value of its asset-backed-securities portfolio.
It lowered its price target on the British bank to 1.10 pounds from 1.85 pounds.
RBS said HSBC's earnings will decline 79 percent in 2009 and a synchronised global slowdown will lead to a further rise in loan impairments during the year. RBS also said it sees no cash dividends at HSBC Holdings until after fiscal 2011.
The brokerage cut its price target on HSBC stock to 4.50 pounds from 8.50 pounds and on Standard Chartered to 6.40 pounds from 8.50 pounds.
RBS upgraded Lloyds TSB (LLOY.L: Quote, Profile, Research) to "hold" from "sell," saying it was the most geared to any equity-friendly government initiative and had undemanding valuation. (Reporting by Eric Yep in Bangalore; Editing by Vinu Pilakkott)

$149 bn rescue plan for Royal Bank of Scotland

New Delhi: World stocks rose on Monday while government bonds fell after Britain launched a multi-billion rescue plan for its troubled banks and the incoming US administration planned more measures to help the economy.

The UK government will allow banks to insure against steep losses and guarantee their debt to stop the credit crunch pushing the economy into a deep slump. The plan raises the government's stake in Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS.L: Quote, Profile, Research), which said it lost over 20 billion pounds last year, and also lays the framework for the Bank of England to boost money supply.

Barclays whose shares fell 25 per cent on Friday, confirmed it expected to report full-year profit above the consensus estimate.

The senior advisor of US President-elect Barack Obama, who is set to take office on Tuesday following a national holiday on Monday, said there would be changes to make the second half of the country's $700 billion bank rescue scheme more effective.

The measures on both sides of the Atlantic come as the credit crunch, well into its second year, squeezes corporate profits, hits consumer spending and pushes many major economies into recession.

"Clearly everybody has been forced to accept that the global economy is in dire straits, but it is the variety of solutions that are being offered up that are dictating the markets at present," Chris Hossain, senior manager at ODL Securities.

"Soothing words from Barclays, and further government intervention within the banking system appear to have been taken relatively well," he added.

"Sterling is going to come under pressure on the back of this, though in the medium-term the government announcement should be positive for sterling as it helps stabilise credit and lending markets."

Treasury statement: Restructuring investment in RBS

Treasury statement: Restructuring investment in RBS
Published: January 19 2009 09:46 | Last updated: January 19 2009 09:46

With continuing instability in the global financial markets, expected to be demonstrated by a run of poor financial results from the industry, the Government is today taking action, building on the comprehensive set of measures it announced on 13 October, to adjust its commercial investments in the Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc (RBS) to stabilise further its position and ensure it has the tools to enhance its contribution to the long term strength of the economy.

The Government, in consultation with UK Financial Investments (UKFI), has today agreed to convert the Treasury’s preference share investment in RBS to ordinary shares, with the aim of: supporting stability in the financial system; ensuring continued protection for ordinary savers, depositors, businesses and borrowers; and maintaining a safeguard of the interests of the taxpayer. In summary, this action is intended to:

• make available additional core tier 1 capital to the bank to strengthen its resources, enable it to absorb expected losses and permit it to restructure its finances; and

• give the bank the opportunity to build its capital further so that it is able to maintain and increase its support for the real economy by facilitating £6bn more lending to industry and homeowners, over and above existing commitments.

The Treasury, Bank of England and Financial Services Authority have continued their detailed discussions with the institutions that participated in the recapitalisation scheme last year. These institutions committed in aggregate to strengthen their total tier 1 capital, either through their own actions or, where requested, through additional support from the Government by increasing or restructuring the preference and ordinary share capital.

The Government is not injecting new money into RBS.

As part of its agreement, the Government has agreed with RBS commitments including:

• the extension to large corporates of the existing agreement to maintain, over the next three years, the availability and active marketing of competitively-priced lending to homeowners and to small businesses at 2007 levels or above; and

• increasing lending still further by £6bn in the next 12 months.

UKFI will continue to manage the Government’s shareholdings in the recapitalised institutions on a commercial arms-length basis and with the aim of realising value for the taxpayer. Consistent with the Government’s aim that it should not be a permanent investor in UK financial institutions, UKFI will develop and execute a strategy for disposing of the shareholdings in an orderly way.

The measures the Government is announcing today support stability in the wider financial system, and protect the interest of taxpayers, depositors and savers.

European Stocks Decline; Royal Bank of Scotland, BASF Retreat

By Adam Haigh
Jan. 19 (Bloomberg) -- Stocks in Europe fell as investors speculated government efforts to shore up the financial industry won’t be enough to prevent the global economy from weakening.
Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc led declines among banks, slumping 63 percent, after saying it expects to report a loss for 2008. BASF SE dropped 4.6 percent as the world’s largest chemical producer reduced production and said it may cut additional jobs after demand deteriorated “significantly.” Stock markets in the U.S. are closed today for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
The Dow Jones Stoxx 600 Index slid 1.3 percent to 190.54 at 2:09 p.m. in London, extending the measure’s 11 percent tumble during the past nine days as companies from Deutsche Bank AG to Alcoa Inc. fueled concern the global recession will wipe out profit growth. The U.K. government today said it will guarantee toxic bank assets and gave the Bank of England unprecedented power to buy securities.
“I don’t agree it is addressing the problem,” said Roger Nightingale, who helps oversee about $1.1 billion as London-based strategist at Pointon York Ltd. “I have grave doubts that the policies pursued by this government are going to help in the medium to longer term,” he told Bloomberg Television.
The euro-area economy will shrink 1.9 percent this year, the first time since the currency was introduced a decade ago, the European Commission said today. The European Central Bank, last month predicted a 0.5 percent contraction for 2009.
National benchmark indexes fell in all 18 western European markets except Iceland. Germany’s DAX dropped 0.7 percent, while the U.K.’s FTSE 100 slipped 0.7 percent. Spain’s IBEX 35 lost 1.1 percent, led by Banco Santander SA.
Credit Rating
Spain had its AAA sovereign credit rating removed by Standard & Poor’s in the second downgrade of a euro-region government in five days, as the country’s first recession in 15 years swelled the budget deficit. Greece’s rating was cut one step to A- on Jan. 14.
Billionaire Warren Buffett, chairman of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. and one of the world’s most successful investors, said the U.S. has been struck by an “economic Pearl Harbor,” according to remarks aired on Dateline NBC yesterday.
President-elect Barack Obama’s advisers signaled they will emphasize getting credit to consumers and businesses rather than helping banks as the new administration deploys the second half of the $700 billion rescue fund.
Asia’s MSCI Asia Pacific Index rose 0.4 percent. Futures on the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index decreased 0.9 percent.
Earnings Outlook
RBS sank 63 percent to 12.7 pence after saying it expects to post a full-year loss before exceptional goodwill impairments of as much as 8 billion pounds. In addition, the bank may write down the value of past acquisitions by as much as 20 billion pounds.
Analysts forecast earnings at financial companies in the Stoxx 600 will rise 42 percent in 2009 following a 59 percent slide last year, according to Bloomberg data. The benchmark index posted its worst annual slump on record in 2008 as more than $1 trillion in credit losses and writedowns eroded profits.
Plans by the U.K. Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s government will increase the cost of bailing out the nation’s banks by at least 100 billion pounds ($147 billion), the Treasury said today. This sent the pound lower against the euro and the dollar.
“Many initiatives have been announced for U.K. banks this morning, but we are disappointed not to see the full removal of ‘bad assets’ from balance sheets,” JPMorgan Chase & Co. banking analyst Carla Antunes Da Silva wrote in a note to clients.
Barclays, Santander
Barclays Plc, the U.K. bank that turned down government funding last year, slipped 2.8 percent to 95.3 pence even after saying 2008 earnings will exceed estimates and calling its 25 percent share-price slump on Jan. 16 unjustified.
Santander, Spain’s biggest bank, retreated 5.2 percent to 5.79 euros. Germany’s Deutsche Bank AG tumbled 9.5 percent to 18.12 euros.
BASF declined 4.6 percent to 22.68 euros after the company said demand for all chemical products has failed to pick up in the first half of January.
Syngenta AG, the world’s largest maker of agricultural chemicals, lost 1.4 percent to 213.8 francs.
Cie. Financiere Richemont SA slid 4.7 percent to 16.75 francs. The biggest jewelry maker said third-quarter sales declined 7 percent as customers in Europe and North America reduced spending on Cartier necklaces and Chloe fashions.
Pearson Plc led a rally among media companies, which posted the steepest gain among all 19 industry groups on the Stoxx 600. The publisher of the Financial Times newspaper added 4.7 percent to 626 pence after saying earnings excluding some items rose about 20 percent in 2008, exceeding analysts’ estimates.

Coughlin Stoia Geller Rudman & Robbins LLP Files Class Action Suit against Royal Bank of Scotland - Quick Facts (RTTNews) - Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc (RBS: News ,RBS.L: News ) said Monday it might report a loss of as much as GBP 28 billion for full-year 2008, hit severely by credit market write-downs and goodwill impairments. The bank expects attributable loss, after credit market write-downs, integration costs, preference dividends and other items, and before exceptional goodwill impairments, in the range of GBP 7 billion - GBP 8 billion. Separately, ABN AMRO, which is currently owned by RFS Holdings B.V., a consortium of RBS, the Government of the Netherlands, and Banco Santander, said that it expects an after-tax profit of about EUR 3.5 billion for fiscal 2008.RBS said that it is currently reviewing the carrying value of goodwill and other purchased intangibles, and preliminary findings indicate an impairment charge in the region of about GBP 15 billion - GBP 20 billion for the year.RBS noted that it now estimates an underlying break-even financial performance after credit impairment losses for 2008, reflecting the profitability across its retail and commercial franchises offsetting losses in the Global Banking and Markets division, or GBM.
In an Interim Management Statement on November 4, 2008 covering the first nine months of the year, RBS had stated that it was not possible to forecast the group's results with precision for the fourth quarter of 2008 in the light of significant uncertainties in credit conditions and an acceleration of the economic slowdown. In the Statement, the bank had also said that GBM was expected to record a loss for the quarter.RBS today said that GBM's fourth-quarter income is estimated to be about GBP 3 billion lower than its expectations at the time of the Interim Management Statement, partially offset by a reduction in variable costs. The company attributed the poor performance of GBM to exceptionally difficult credit trading conditions, ongoing market dislocation, subdued activity levels, reserves against widening market spreads, and further write-downs on a variety of trading assets. For 2008, RBS estimates credit impairment losses between GBP 6.5 billion and GBP 7 billion. Write-downs for the full-year relating to the Group's previously disclosed credit market exposures are estimated in the region of GBP 8 billion after hedging gains of approximately GBP 1.7 billion.Further, the bank said that it has reached agreement with HM Treasury and UK Financial Investments, or UKFI, to convert the Treasury's GBP 5 billion of preference share investment in RBS to new ordinary shares. Eligible RBS shareholders can apply to subscribe for approximately GBP 5 billion of new ordinary shares pro rata to their existing shareholdings at a fixed price of 31.75 pence per share. This price represents an 8.5% discount to RBS' closing share price on January 16. The ordinary shares offer is fully underwritten by HMT and the proceeds will be used to fully redeem the preference shares held by HMT.

RTTNews) - Commenting on the trading, Stephen Hester, RBS Group Chief Executive, said "The dislocation of credit markets and the global economic downturn continue to hit RBS hard, as with many other banks. We are making progress in recognizing excess risk and dealing with it. Significant uncertainties and risks inevitably remain.""In this context, the support we are receiving from Government benefits all our stakeholders and enables us to provide more customer support in return. With enhanced core capital, removal of the preference share dividend and the prospect of further asset and liquidity measures, RBS is able to continue its strategic restructuring purposefully," Hester added. Further, RBS stated that it has made Board and Executive changes and more will occur. On Friday, the bank announced the appointment of Sir Philip Hampton as Chairman-designate.Meanwhile, ABN said that the profit estimate includes a loss after tax in the region of EUR 13 billion from continuing operations, offset by a gain after tax of EUR 16.5 billion from discontinued operations, including the results from the sale and transfer of Banco Real, Banca Antonveneta and the Asset Management business.
ABN also said that its loss from continuing operations is primarily due to the GBM business acquired by RBS. Meanwhile, the businesses acquired by the Dutch government, principally the Dutch branch network and the Private Clients business, were profitable for the full year, ABN noted. The bank expects to announce its full-year 2008 results in March.Going forward, RBS said that significant uncertainties remain both in the world economy and markets. While more asset deterioration and significant credit losses seem certain, their extent and timing cannot be predicted. The bank intends to engage closely with Government on its new asset and funding initiatives announced today.RBS closed Friday's trading at $10.85, down $1.25, on a volume of 1.08 million shares.RBS.L is trading at 20 pence on the LSE, down 14.70 pence, on a volume of 221.88 million shares. by RTT Staff WriterFor comments and feedback: contact editorial@rttnews.com

Barclays (BCS) Crushed

http://www.istockanalyst.com/article/viewarticle/articleid/2960091
Sometimes it is a wonder the S&P is not trading at 400 instead of 800. Barclays (BCS) - for American readers - is one of the largest UK banks. The UK as you know, decided to follow the US model of light regulation and massive "financial innovation" - you can see it's gotten them in the same pickle we are. It looks like every major bank in the two most "innovative" (i.e. thinking of ways guys with MBAs can act like the snake oil salesmen they are) countries is going to be in the hands of the government.
Britain's Barclays PLC was the worst hit stock.... as dismal fourth quarter earnings from Bank of America and Citigroup Inc. and the nationalization of Anglo Irish Bank PLC (AIB) fueled speculation other banks will post bigger than anticipated losses that may eventually require government assistance.
"It's become abundantly clear by the results and the AIB news that the world's banking sector needs more capital and the market is speculating that Barclays will need more capital," said David Buik of BGC Partners in London.
Barclays opted not to take government cash during last October's 37 billion pound bailout ($55 billion) of the banks and instead raised 7 billion pounds from private investors in the Middle East. Earlier this week, the company announced plans to axe 4,200 jobs to cut costs, further stoking fears that the bank was short of cash.
Other British banks suffered late selling, with Royal Bank of Scotland, nearly 60 percent owned by the government, down 13 percent and Lloyds TSB down about 5 percent. The losses came on the day that a ban on short-selling of shares was lifted in Britain. We're literally going to have armies of zombie banks in the two countries that drive Western finance. (but we're not Japan, mind you so don't you dare imply it)

http://www.istockanalyst.com/images/articles/bcs.png2009126237small.jpg

laughable thing about all this is as the banks lobbyied for less and less regulation, they pointed to each other (New York would point at London, and London at New York) and say "if you give us regulation, we'll lose business to the other city!" There is almost sweet justice to this - if it wasn't costing us our economies. I just am sickened that so many executives and top honchos (the used car salesmen) made so much money that they get to keep, while 2 countries financial systems implode.More importantly to me, who is going to sponsor the English Premier League??These truly are times I hope future politicians remember when the next generation of bankers whisper sweet nothings about how regulation is destroying their profit potential and in fact the entire potential of the national economy. The realist in me, knows sometime 5+ years from now whatever regulation is now enforced will be loosened with the same sorry excuses they used the past decade... regulation is stifling our ability to innovate. Money talks - that's all that matters in the long run. You pay - you shape the rules. Cramerica.A sorry state of affairs. One day, I hope someone writes the book on the sordid dealings between these financiers and their lobbyists and the politicos. Maybe Americans would get mad... or protest... or... nah, nevermind. Football is on this weekend; we have priorities.

苏格兰皇家银行遭绝杀

HSBC Says It’s ‘Strongly Capitalized,’ Counters Investor Claim

Jan. 19 (Bloomberg) -- HSBC Holdings Plc said it’s one of the world’s most strongly capitalized banks after shareholder Knight Vinke Asset Management LLC said the London-based lender may need to plug a “substantial” capital shortfall.

HSBC slumped 3.1 percent to 519 pence at 11:21 a.m. in London, the lowest for 10 years, for a market value of 63.1 billion pounds ($92.7 billion.)

The bank is one of the world’s most “strongly capitalized” lenders and hasn’t sought capital support from the U.K. government, it said in a statement. The bank “cannot envisage circumstances” where it would need government funding, it added.

Knight Vinke today joined Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets in predicting HSBC will be forced to sell shares for the first time since the financial crisis began in 2007. Fitch Ratings said Jan. 16 it may cut HSBC’s credit rating as the global recession undermines its finances.

The U.K. government today announced an additional 100 billion pounds of assistance for the nation’s banks by guaranteeing toxic assets and pledged to raise its stake in Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc to as much as 70 percent.

HSBC’s investment in subprime lender Household International “has turned out to be an unmitigated disaster,” Knight Vinke said in a statement published on its Web site yesterday.

“There can be little doubt that HSBC will need substantial additional capital if Household is not restructured,” Eric Knight, chief executive officer of Knight Vinke, said in the statement.

HSBC may post a $1.5 billion loss, raise $17 billion in a share issue, and pay no dividend in 2009, Goldman analysts said Jan. 16, citing a deteriorating U.S. economy and falling property prices.

Fitch cut its outlook on HSBC’s debt to “negative” from “stable” and said the bank’s long-term issuer default rating may be lowered over the “medium term.” HSBC’s profitability in the fourth quarter was probably “weak” and the bank is increasingly likely to need to raise funds to support the U.S. unit, Fitch said.
